Alonei Mamre

About two kilometers north-west of Kiryat Arba, there is an ancient site from the Roman Era that is identified as the place where the three angels were revealed to Avraham Avinu.  According to tradition, this is also the place where the Brit bein HaBitarim was engraved and Avraham Avinu underwent Brit Mila.  The oldest ruins that can be seen there today are remnants of Herodian walls.  Close to the eastern wall of the ruins, there are the remains of a Byzantine entrance that was built during the fourth century on the ruins of an altar that was built by the Romans.  In the southwestern corner, there is a well that is known as Beer Avraham.

After the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash, the site was used as a market for the sale of Jews, who were sold into slavery for the price of horse feed.

In 1997, due to the Hevron Agreement, the site was placed under the control of the Palestine Authority.
