Tomb of Yishai and Ruth

Tomb of Yishai and Ruth

A structure from the time of the Crusaders stands at the top of the biblical Tel Hevron, today known as Tel Romeida, where the Admot Yishai Neighborhood is located.

According to tradition, this structure marks the grave site of Yishai, father of David.  This is verified by Rabeinu Ovadia from Bartenura, who prayed there, along with others who also visited the site.  Later tradition holds that the site is also the burial place of Ruth the Moabite (the mother of Yishais father).

Due to this tradition, the Jewish cemetery in Hevron was established adjacent to the grave site.

Jewish literature, based on the accounts of Rav Moshe Basula (16th century) holds that there is a tunnel that leads from the site to Mearat HaMachpela.

To the west, there is a curved structure that is built surprisingly, in the direction of Jerusalem, which bears witness to existence of a synagogue there.

Above this, there is a lookout point that allows for a view of the whole city of Hevron, Mearat HaMachpela and Kiryat Arba.  On particularly clear days, the Moab Mountains can also be seen.

The entire area, including the cemetery was bought by the Jewish community of Hevron from the waqf.
