The Tomb of Avner Ben Ner

The Tomb of Avner Ben Ner

According to tradition, the tomb of Avner Ben Ner is situated in the heart of the city of Hevron, next to Merart HaMachpela.

Avner ben Ner was King Sauls uncle and a commander-in-chief of his army.  After Saul was killed in battle, Avner Ben Ner anointed his son, Ish-bosheth.  He was murdered by Yoav Ben Tzuriyah, whose brother, Eshhael was killed by Avner in the Battle at Givon.

According to tradition, the head of Ish-bosheth ben Saul is buried close to Avner Ben Ners gravesite.

Sefer Shmuel Bet, tells about Avners grave:

And Avner was buried in Hevron, and the king lifted up his voice and cried at the grave of Avner and the whole nation cried ….. and the head of Ish-bosheth was taken and buried at Avners grave in Hevron. (Shmuel Beth, Chapter 4, Verse 12)

The site of the tomb of Avner Ben Ner is mentioned in the journals of many travelers.  Rabbi Moshe Basola came for a visit in 1522 and wrote that the Muslims built a mosque on the site.  The writer of the book, Yichus Tzadikkim wrote that at the head of the market place in Hevron, against a high wall, the gravesite of Avner Ben Ner can be found in a cave near a church.
