The Old Cemetery

The old cemetery is located in the ancient part of Hevron known as Tel Romeida near the Admot Yishai neighborhood.

There is a structure from the time of the Crusaders at the top of the hill.  According to tradition, the gravesites of Yishai, the father of David and Ruth the Moabite are located here.

In accordance with this tradition, the Jewish cemetery was placed close by.  According to rabbinical literature, there is a tunnel from the cemetery that ends at Mearat HaMachpela.  The old Jewish cemetery in Hevron in one of the oldest cemeteries in Israel.  There is evidence of burials taking place there since the time of the students of the Ramban and continuing throughout the generations.

To the west, there is a curved structure that is built surprisingly, in the direction of Jerusalem.  Above this, there is a lookout point that allows for a view of the whole city of Hevron, Mearat HaMachpela and Kiryat Arba.  On particularly clear days, the Moab Mountains can also be seen.

Many great Torah scholars are buried in the cemetery including the Reishit Chochma, the Sdei Hemed and HaChesed LAvraham, among many others. The Jews slaughtered in the 1929 Arab uprisings are buried here, alongside those who have passed away from Kiryat Arba and Hevron and fallen soldiers.

The whole area of the hill, including the portion that is the cemetery, was bought by the Jewish community of Hevron from waqf.
